All About Intimacy Coordinating

What an Intimacy Coordinator does and when You need to hire one

Just as physically challenging scenes often necessitate a stunt coordinator to ensure the safety of cast and crew, when a script has nudity and/or simulated sex scenes, an Intimacy Coordinator (IC) works with the director and actors to translate these moments into the desired creative vision while making sure the actors feel informed, safe, and supported throughout the process.

If your production includes scenes of nudity and/or simulated sex requiring nudity riders, then an IC is definitely in order. You should also hire one if your script involves or requires: simulated genital contact; closed set protocols; physically or emotionally challenging moments; or needs specific intimate choreography (e.g. stripping, domination, unconventional sex). Intimacy coordinators are also helpful in mitigating power imbalances surrounding intimate scenes that might otherwise disrupt a production.

Why hire Troy as IC for your production

As an IPA-certified IC, Troy adheres to SAG-AFTRA’s recommended standards and protocols for intimacy coordinators. Her approach is respectful of the needs of a demanding production while still prioritizing the safety and creative expression of all involved. Resourceful, detail-oriented, and approachable, Troy works to make sure that the vulnerability is in the performances, not for the performers — or the production. While Troy’s experienced in navigating many expressions of intimacy, as a queer, Black intimacy coordinator, she’s particularly skilled in making scenes involving BDSM, queer and/or BIPOC sex and romance, implied/suggestive sexual contact, and character-driven intimacy recognizable, believable, and unforced.
